The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

Sunday, May 31, 2009

Plot: If you haven't read The Summoning then STOP HERE:

Okay...so your obviously past that one so let's move on to The Awakening. This is just one of those books that you just have to keep going on...no matter what, you just HAVE to know what happens next. I love Kelley Armstrong's style of writing, and the second book in this series just ties up SOME loose ends, but your really still not sure about why some of the things are happening. The gang is still on the search for Derek and Simon's dad in hopes that he will be able to unravel the mystery of the Edison Group, and Chloe is still learning how to harness her power as a necromancer (Someone who raises the dead). So basically they are still on the run...and still searching for answers, and keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Review: I really enjoyed this one, and was counting down its release date. I'll definitely be picking up the third installment in the Darkest Powers Series when it comes out. So if you liked The Summoning, this one is a gimme...you just have to continue the story of lovable Chloe Saunders.

Thrill Ride by Rachel Hawthorne

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Plot: Megan's taken a job at the country's top amusement park, Thrill Ride, against her new steady boyfriends wishes. It will be hard being away from her friends and family, but it's better than being stuck in Texas for the summer listening to her Mother and sister argue over summer wedding plans. After getting settled in, Megan gets a little taste of freedom. Living in a dorm, working by day, and partying by night with her sexy co-worker Parker, what could be better? Can her budding new relationship withstand a summer apart and while she's hanging around a hot new boy?

Review: Uber cute fluffy teen romance. Makes me wish to be 17 again. :) This one is a quick, fun little read. If you feel like getting wrapped up in a drama fill teen love story...read it.

Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Plot: Okay, if you haven't read Wicked Lovely or Ink Exchange STOP HERE; but if you have...proceed :)

"Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone—but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he'd ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen.
Aislinn never expected to rule the very creatures who'd always terrified her—but that was before Keenan. He stole her mortality to make her a monarch, and now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she'd ever imagined.
In Melissa Marr's third mesmerizing tale of Faerie, Seth and Aislinn struggle to stay true to themselves and each other in a milieu of shadowy rules and shifting allegiances, where old friends become new enemies and one wrong move could plunge the Earth into chaos."

This book pretty much picks up pretty much where Wicked Lovely stopped. Of course it is critical to have read ink exchange as well to understand why Naill is so upset with the summer court, but this was a great set up for the next book in the series. I love how this book details Aislinn's struggle within herself to hold on to her mortal love (Seth) and push the faery king's (Keenan) advances aside. I finished the book, I was sad that is was over...I wanted to keep going. Can't wait until book four hits the shelves.

Review: Awesome read, dark and twisted in the best way. I can totally picture this series as movies or TV shows, great detail in her setting descriptions. Gotta get this one!

Need by Carrie Jones

Plot: Zara is sent off to live with her Grandmother in some little town in Maine because after her father's death her mother cannot care for own teenage daughter. When Zara meets her new classmates she developed connections with the sexy Nick and the overachiever Ian and finds she not the only one who notices something weirds going on. Zara soon learns this little town in Maine has a history of teenage boys going missing that is now repeating itself. Zara learns that a pixie king is kidnapping these boys to relieve his need, hunger for blood and will continue to do this until he is mated with a queen. It's up to Zara to untangle this mysterious web of secrets and save these boys.
Okay the stalking faery in the woods hooked me! Plus he leaves trails of gold glitter everywhere he goes, so it's proof she's not crazy, that he is actually real. I just wish a little more happened with the love interest in this book. Other than that excellent Read!
Review: If you are a Twilight fan, you'll love this book.

Sweethearts by Sara Zarr

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Plot: Jennifer Harris has exactly one friend in her entire elementary school...Carmeron Quick. They are both out casted geeks who only fit in with each other. They are constantly teased and ridiculed. They desperate cling to each others companionship, and hold on to each other for dear life...that is until Carmeron disappears without a word. Jennifer is stunned when her classmates inform her that Carmeron is dead and she totally closes down, until her mom finally finishes night school, remarries and moves them into a better neighborhood at the start of her high school career. This move gives Jennifer Harris a chance to reinvent herself as Jenna Vaugh and finally be in the in crowd. Things are finally going great for Jenna, she's got the right friends, the right clothes and the right boyfriend...so why does she still feel like something is missing?

Okay...let me just say this book is NOT a typical YA romance novel. It's filled with some very deep and emotional issues that effect kids everyday, but is rarely discussed openly.

Review: I kept reading because it had some amazing flash backs that left me hanging and I just had to know how these flash backs helped shape Jenna. I enjoyed this book...until the very end. It didn't leave me with much closer and this is not the type of book that has a sequel, so if you don't like open endings...this ones for you.

When it happens by Susane Colasanti

Friday, May 15, 2009

Plot: "Sara is entering her senior year hoping that she'll find true love. She is encouraged when Dave asks her out. He is part of the in crowd, and she begins to hang out with his friends, at the expense of her relationships with her girlfriends. Next, readers hear from Tobey. He has slept with a couple of girls, but is uncomfortable with that kind of relationship. He thinks Sara is his real thing, and he asks her friend Laila to help him win her over. Tobey and Sara become partners in music class and find they have much in common. Dave, on the other hand, is a disappointment to her. When he pressures Sara to sleep with him, she finally realizes that she confused her attraction to his good looks and connections with honest feelings. Through alternating chapters, readers get the perspectives of Tobey and Sara about their developing relationship. The easy style of the writing reflects how teens speak, and some of the characters' language is realistically gritty. This is a fun romance with lots of dialogue."
I loved the story of Tobi and Sara, Couldn't put it down, I loved how it flipped back and fourth between her point of view and his! This helps you personally relate to each of them. You root for them to be together. There's a lot of references to pop culture items that helped me totally visualize the story. This was a very true to life teen romance.
Review: If you are looking for a fluffy teen romance novel that will leave you smiling, you'll like this book.

My Education As a Vampire by B. Michael Allen

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Plot: The story is about a group of teens that get attacked and turned and find themselves trying to figure out how to survive in their new lives. This book was interesting, it was a different take then most YA, a little more geared toward the harsh reality of what a vampire really is vs. the romantic relationships they have (Which is what most YA vamp books are geared toward

I would think this would be a vamp book the the boys would enjoy, although young girls may be interested in the friendships in the book.

Sidebar: This is the authors first book and I picked it up at my local Barnes&Noble when he was doing a book signing. I met B. Michael Allen and he was a very nice guy, he told me this story actually started out as a bedtime story for his boys and they liked it so much he just starting writing it down everyday so he wouldn't forget the story.

Review: The book itself was very short, not real detailed, but like I said it was his first book..With that being said, if you like vampire stories you'll probably like this quick little read (only 176 pages) but just don't expect a lot of relationship drama. This book I thought would be geared more towards young adolescent boys because it's filled with more fighting and survival and not romance. There is a second book out called The Twins which I bought also and will get around to eventually.

Beastly by Alex Flinn

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Plot: Okay, we've all heard of Beauty and the Beast right...well this book is pretty much that story with a modern day twist told by the beast's perspective. The guy is a rich popular guy who can get any girl he wants and he's mean to anyone he feels is beneath him. So, with that being said Kyle Kingbury is really mean to this girl, he stands her up at a dance just for laughs, but what he doesn't realize is that Kendra is a witch. Kyle soon finds out when Kendra casts a spell on him what if feels like to be not so perfect anymore, and that looks aren't everything...

Okay, I can't give it all away but you get the idea. I know the story has already been done and we all know how it's going to end...just the same I was so captivated by this book I read it in one sitting.

Review: Pick it up if you are looking for a fairy tale with a modern twist, but if you're not interested in reading something you already know how it ends...skip it.

Take Me There by Susane Colasanti

Plot: "Rhiannon loves order, math, and Steve, but Steve dumped her for the manipulative, skanky Gloria. James loves serenity, designing software, and his friendship with Rhiannon. But his home is chaotic, and Rhiannon doesn’t know how much he cares for her. Nicole loves her math teacher, her friendship with Rhiannon, and her ex-boyfriend, Danny. But Nicole has a secret that threatens all of her relationships. Over the course of a week, Colasanti’s story, told in alternating narratives, describes how the three teens cope with the same events, each other, and their own issues. Each character’s voice is strong, and the dialogue is stolen right from the corridors of a contemporary high school. Readers, especially girls, will appreciate the very satisfying resolutions of all three characters’ issues: Rhiannon gets revenge and recognizes the depth of her friendship with James; James receives a surprising gift; and Nicole acknowledges the consequences of her father’s abuse and her conflicted feelings for Danny."

This book was okay...it kind of dragged on, at first I was interested, but then it just kind of fizzled out. I think this book would have been better if it were a little shorter and got to the point a little sooner.

Review: I've read better

Evermore by Alyson Noel

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Plot: "Seventeen-year-old Ever survived the car crash that killed her parents, younger
sister, and their dog. Now she lives with an aunt in Southern California, plagued not only by survivor guilt but also by a new ability to hear the thoughts of all around her. She tries to tune out all these distractions by keeping her hoodie up and her iPod cranked loud, until Damen, the cute new boy at school, convinces her to come out of her shell. Damen, however, is frighteningly clever—and has the strange ability to produce tulips from nowhere and disappear himself at critical moments. "

Review: Must Read, I couldn't put this one down once I started it. I felt so sorry for Ever, can you imagine being the only surviving member of your family after a car crash, then to have your little sister haunt you? Damen seems perfect for her, and there is a definite reason for that...but I can't tell you because it will give away the whole book :)

Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception (Paperback) by Maggie Stiefvater

Plot:
Sixteen-year-old Deirdre Monaghan, a gifted harpist who regularly plays for
weddings and other events, has the kind of stage fright that makes her
physically ill before a performance, which is an inauspicious way to start a
romance; but while vomiting before a competition she meets a gorgeous boy who
comes into the restroom to hold her hair. He is Luke Dillon, a flautist who
proceeds to accompany her in a truly stellar performance. As four-leaf clovers
start appearing everywhere, Deirdre develops telekinetic powers and encounters
strange, unworldly people who seem to bear her ill will. Her best friend, James,
also a talented musician; her beloved grandmother; and her mother all are in
danger, as Deirdre is targeted by the queen of Faerie. Deirdre eventually
discovers that she is a cloverhand, a person who can see the denizens of
faerie, and Luke, not the only immortal who has her in his sights, is a gallowglass, an assassin
assigned by the queen of Faerie to kill Deirdre but who falls in love with her
instead.

This book was a page turner...it made you wonder what is up with this Luke Dillion guy the whole way through. He came off kind of weird, but interesting, you just wanted to know more about him. The ending kinda leaves you open, you almost have to read the next book in the series (Ballad -comes out in October 2009) to find out what happens between Deirdre and the brooding Luke.

Reveiw: Good Read, if you like twilight this one will capture your attention :)

Two-Way Street by Lauren Barnholdt

Ohhh where to start with this book! It was totally cute, and I loved it. It was well written, and jumps back and fourth in first person perspective from Jordan and Courtney so you know how they are both feeling...Loved it!

Review: Must Read

Plot: Courtney and Jordan were once a happy couple...but now they are broken up and Courtney is crushed. Not only did Jordan break up with her and break her heart, but the explanation for why was he is now in love with a myspace Internet girl. Can you imagine! Anyway, Jordan dumps her right before graduation and ruins their plans to go off to school together since they are going to be attending the same college. Courtney is appalled that her parents are still going to make her go on the road trip to college in Boston with Jordan since the cost of a plane ticket is too much last minute. Courtney dreads this trip, and yet Jordan is looking forward to it???Let's just say things on the road trip get interesting, and maybe things aren't always as they seem.

You gotta read this book to find out what happens to Courtney and Jordan :) I loved it, I just was hoping for something a little more dramatic, but overall an awesome book.
