Giveaway and Review of The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa

Title: The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1)

Author:

Hardcover, 485 pages
Published April 24th 2012 by Harlequin Teen
series
Source: ARC

"In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity."Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of "them." The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked--and given the ultimate choice. Die...or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend--a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what--and who--is worth dying for.

My Thoughts:

And who says the vampire genre is dead? The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa has renewed my faith in blood thirsty, kick-ass vampires. Finally we have a teenage vampire who isn't afraid to sink her fangs into someone when the time comes.

Allie begins as a human who hates vampires in the beginning of the novel, which is a great place to start. We find out from her why vampires are so evil. Then later on in the novel when she becomes one, we understand her personal self-loathing at times.

I did enjoy this novel, however, I will warn you, it took me a while to get into this one. Nearly 150 pages. Things for me didn't pick up until Allie leaves the vampire city and runs into Zeke. I loved reading about the crew of drifter Zeke was with, and how they were on a quest to find a vampire free paradise called Eden. Get past the beginning, and I promise there's vampire action!!

The picture below I found while looking up book cover images. Apparently, this was a cover outtake, but I admit I love this picture. It's perfect for Allie's character!

I also read that this novel is in the works to become a movie!! So you better act fast and read this one before the craze hits!

Check out the amazing book trailer for this novel:

Overall, I say read it if you are a vampire fan, or love I AM LEGEND or just a fan of kick-butt heroines!

Now on to the good stuff! I have ONE copy of THE IMMORTAL RULES to give away. Leave a comment below with your email address to enter. No, you don't have to be a follower of this blog, but I will love you forever if you are!

Contest open today, July 4th 2012 through Monday, July 9th at midnight!
I will announce the winner Next Tuesday and email the winner!

Good luck!!

CRUSH CONTROL Review and Giveaway!!

Monday, July 18, 2011

Title: Crush Control
Author: Jennifer Jabaley
Publisher: Razorbill
Source: ARC

Reading, Writing and Waiting is excited to be part of Jennifer Jabaley's CRUSH CONTROL blog tour!

I read through CRUSH CONTROL at lightning speed because I couldn't stop myself!  I remember reading about this sale in Publisher's Marketplace and thinking how awesome it sounded, and it didn't disappoint.  I loved it!

Here's the blurb:

Willow has spent most of her life as her mother's sidekick in a popular Las Vegas hypnotism show. So when she and her mom move back to their sleepy southern hometown to start over, she thinks she's in for a life of quiet normalcy. Except that her new life turns out to be anything but, when she kinda sorta hypnotizes Quinton, the hottest guy on the football team, to fall madly, deeply, head over heels in love with her. But what started out as an innocent way to make her best friend, Max, jealous soon gets way out of hand, and Willow begins to wonder if the mind - and more importantly, the heart - is something you can really control.

From the first chapter, I was a fan of Willow.  She's quirky and funny and 100% relatable.  When her dog starts humping hot guy, Quinton's leg at the park when they first meet, I was as humiliated for Willow as she was for herself.

Willow's BFF, Max, once chubby nice guy turned hottie, is swoon-worthy, but not above letting Willow know when he's disappointed in her for considering using hypnosis herself.  But once the popularity takes hold and Willow can honestly say her hypnosis is helping others, it's hard to turn back...until it all goes very, very wrong.

Threaded through the story is a secondary plot about Willow's mom and grandma and what it takes to accept your child for who they are.  It's equally well done and heart-warming.

This is a five star book that I plan to read again and again.

Do you want to own the Crush Control ARC?

All you need to do is leave a comment with your email address.  Extra points for tweeting the contest - just make sure to @JamieMBlair me, so I know you tweeted!  Winner will be picked at random on FRIDAY, July 22!

Detour 2 Death Offical Guest Post and Giveaway by J.R. Turner!

Monday, February 28, 2011

Hey Guys!! Today I have a very special guest poster. Her name is J.R. Turner and she is the acquiring editor for Quake Publishing and is here to tell us about her new novel, DETOUR 2 DEATH. This YA paranormal story has all the elements to be a real page turner (see blurb below) and I can't wait to get my hands on this one. Make sure you read the post, because at the end Jenny has been kind enough to put on a little giveaway!! Thank you Jenny!!!
~~~Annie~~~
Detour 2 Death back cover blurb:
There are worse things than death, but not at Marsden Memorial hospital.
Kaylee Hensler knows her best friend Davey is on the brink of death. She knows this because she’s a psychic. When she flees the girl’s reformatory to get to him, she has no idea the special sort of hell waiting for her.
Reapers are collectors and they come in many forms. In Feverland, the world created by Davey’s sickness, the red reaper goes by the name of Molok, an ancient evil with deep roots. In Shadowland, the dark side of the hospital, a black reaper promises torture and torment to lost souls. The white reaper is the most fearsome, giving Kaylee three days before he collects both her and Davey’s souls.
Kaylee has one secret weapon, one she doesn’t fully understand. Her abilities will be tested, her loyalty betrayed, and her love misplaced. No one escapes Death.
J.R. Turner Bio:
Award-winning author J.R. Turner lives in Central Wisconsin with her husband and three children. She began writing in high school, and after a decade working as a commercial artist, started her first novel in 1999. Aside from crafts, camping and cooking, she loves holidays. A favorite is Halloween, a combination of spooky supernatural fun and chocolate. Visit her at http://www.jennifer-turner.com/ to learn more!
Without further ado, I turn over the floor to our guest speaker, J.R. Turner.
Hi Annie, thanks so much for hosting me on my blog tour! :)
I guess the biggest thing my readers all want to know about is the love triangle between Kaylee, her childhood friend Davey, and the archangel Raphael.
At first I didn’t expect Raphael to be anywhere near a love interest for Kaylee, but as time wore on and he showed her more and more love and interest, he became exactly that—a love interest! Seriously though, it was not planned at all. Characters have a way of feeling the way they do—despite the best laid plans. They’re sort of like us in that regard.
Years ago I saw a wonderfully horrible movie called City of Angels with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan. I won’t say why it was horrible (if you’ve seen it, you know) but I will say what was wonderful—the way Cage acted toward Meg throughout most of the movie was breathtaking. That sort of love is something we all crave. I guess as an author, I was feeling pretty guilty about putting Kaylee through so much and over time, Raphael began to exhibit much more love than anticipated.
On the other hand, I totally meant for Davey to be the hot guy who gets the girl in the end. He begins the series in a wheelchair, suffering from Transverse Myelitis (an infection in his spinal column.) He spends all of the first three books very ill. Something happened during the writing of Detour 2 Death though. Because I was channeling his subconscious as Kaylee interacted with him in the dreamscape of his coma, I realized that Davey—though a mild mannered and optimistic guy on the outside—had some serious anger issues on the inside. I mean, wouldn’t anyone have some resentment and bitterness about spending the last two years of school in a wheelchair?
Not only didn’t I expect him to be so angry, I didn’t expect him to be so violent. While in his real world he cherishes Kaylee, in his coma, his subconscious self is paranoid she’s going to leave him. This does not bode well for her when she needs to confront the reaper trying to kill him outside of his coma.
As the series continues, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s going to happen with Raphael and Davey and who she’ll end up with at the end. Right now she has them both, but for how long?
Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog, Annie! I’m looking forward to reading the comments and answering any questions anyone has. I’ll also be happy to choose a name from those who leave a comment and send them a free, handmade and beautifully beaded book thong!
Warmly,
Jenny:)
