Tuesday Teaser Time!!!

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Hey All,
I switched it up a little this week! Sorry it's a tad bit longer than usual. I try to keep it short for you guys because I know we have so many to get through, but I didn't know where to cut this one off.

Here is an exerpt from: The Dying Curse (781 words)

Thanks for checking it out :)

Look for me by moonlight by Mary Downing Hahn

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Plot:
"A lonely teenage girl, an isolated inn by the ocean, a ghost, a mysterious stranger-sure, these are gothic cliches, but in Hahn's (Stepping on the Cracks) able hands, they add up to a stylish supernatural thriller. Cynda, the 16-year-old narrator, has trepidations about moving in with her estranged father and his much younger wife at the Maine inn that they run even before she hears that the inn is haunted, ostensibly by the ghost of a young woman murdered some 60 years ago. Soon after her arrival, handsome, sophisticated Victor Morthanos checks in for a month-long stay. Cynda's five-year-old half-brother, Todd, hates him on sight, but Cynda just as quickly falls in love: Victor alone understands her jealousy and resentment of Todd and her stepmother, and he alone truly appreciates her. By the time Cynda figures out that Victor is a vampire and the murderer of the ghostly girl, she is well on the way to becoming a ghost herself, as is Todd. How Cynda overcomes her thralldom makes for a deliciously spine-tingling story-all the more gripping for its sturdy psychological underpinnings."

Review: Vincent gives me the creeps right away in this book! I thought for a while we were going to have a young girl in sexual situations with an older man. Thank god that didn't happen. LOL Anyway this was published back in 1995 so it there is nothing moder en about the story. Just a creepy guy with the same old same old standard vampire vibe.

Lost It by Kristen Tracy

Plot:
"Tess Whistle lives in Idaho with paranoid parents, who "became born again" after a kitchen fire. The book begins with an account of how she loses her virginity, then flashes back to the start of junior year, when she expected to stay a virgin until she is "at least engaged." Tess has plenty of phobias, mostly of the natural world where she could be "torn to pieces by a pack of recently relocated gray wolves." Just before her whole life crumbles, Benjamin Easter transfers to her school. Tess falls intensely in love without realizing "that you can't depend on another person to provide your own balance." And there's no doubt that Tess's life is out of balance: Her best friend is building a bomb, claiming she wants to blow up a poodle, her parents run off to join a survival camp, and Tess tells Ben she is diabetic as way of explaining her "juvenile" apple juice box, then maintains the lie."
~~ Amazon Description

My Review: I loved the tension between Tess and Ben. I was let down by the ending though...I needed a little more closer to their relationship than what I got.

Honey, Baby, Sweetheart by Deb Caletti

Plot:
"During the summer of her junior year, shy, quiet Ruby McQueen falls in love with the rich boy down the block. After their first motorcycle ride, Travis gives her a beautiful gold chain, and she wears it everywhere. Only later, while on a date with him, does she learn where he gets his gifts–he breaks into houses and steals jewelry. Ruby struggles with her conflicted feelings for him. Her parents are separated and hardly stellar examples when it comes to relationships. By spending time with the Casserole Queens (her librarian mother's senior-citizen book group) and listening to their life stories, the teen and her mother finally discover the role models that they've been lacking."
~~Amazon Description

Review: Let me just say I hate Travis Becker! Th evil part in me was very, very pleased with his ending. Muhahaha. I liked it,wasn't crazy over it. The relationship tension between Ruby and Travis was there, I just wish it focused more on that then the Casserole Club.

Demon Envy by Erin Lynn

Plot:
"Being a teenager can be hell-especially when you're friends with someone who was born there.
Kenzie Sutcliffe woke up to another normal morning-until a demon popped up in her shower. While trying to get rid of a monster zit, she dropped her acne lotion in the tub. And when fifty bucks' worth of it swirled down the drain, it freed a demon from his prison portal. A mysteriously geeky-looking demon.

So now Kenzie is saddled with a creature who looks and acts like every other guy she knows-that is, annoying. At least Levi has a job-if you can call it that. He has to stir up envy and jealousy in humans, or he starves. All he's tempting Kenzie to do is to crawl back into her bedroom and hide there forever. Because no one is going to be coveting her life after this."
~~Amazon Description

Review: I loved this book. Great Teen voice and very funny! This book really moves. I couldn't put it down. I took some major pacing notes from this book. I loved Levi, if I ever get a Demon I hope it's just like him! I highly reccommend this one!

Swoon by Nina Malkin

"Swoon, Connecticut, stands proudly on its heritage and the good behavior of its Lilly Pulitzer–clad inhabitants, so semi-psychic New York transplant Candice (Dice) sticks out like a sore thumb. On the autumnal equinox, Dice’s sweet and gentle cousin Penelope suddenly changes into a dangerous vixen, and only Dice is able to see that she has been possessed. Dice knows she must exorcise Sinclair, the ghost of a handsome young man from the colonial era, but she has fallen deeply in love with the appropriately nicknamed Sin. Finally, Dice follows Sin’s directions for an exorcism, which frees Penelope from his hold and releases Sin into his own physical form. The golem-like Sin finally reveals his goal: to exact revenge on the descendants of those who unjustly hung him for the murder of his fiancĂ©e. Since Sin awakens the quaint town’s denizens to all of their suppressed urges, this steamy and suspenseful romance with a psychic slant and time-travel twist will pull mature teens. The paranormal angle and several star-crossed love pairings will appeal to fans of the Twilight series. Grades 10-12. --Heather Booth"
~~Amazon post

Review: This one started off with a bang. Sin knows how to start some fun trouble. I was really into the book for the first 10 chapters...then it kinda fizzled for me. I loved the concept of the book though, and I think if some of the side stories were cut down it would have been amazing. Some people may totally disagree with me on this one, but I would say read the first few chapters...then skip to the end.

Tuesday Teaser Time!!

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Hello, it's that time of week again. So here is another excerpt of my YA contemporary MS that is still in progress. I have officially dusted it off to try to finish it. This teaser pretty much follows the last two teasers...so not as steamy, just info. I Can't wait to see what everyone else has posted.

Excerpt: I love you, no matter what. (249 words)

Thanks for looking :)

Wings by Aprilynne Pike

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Plot: "Fifteen-year-old Laurel has led a sheltered, homeschooled life in a very small town, so when her parents decide to move and enroll her in high school, she has trouble getting used to her new life. A life, as it turns out, that’s not at all like those of other kids. One clear sign is a winglike blossom that blooms on her back. Oh, and her new best friend, the scientifically minded David, reveals under a microscope that her cells are more plant than animal. But it takes an encounter at her old home with the handsome but decidedly different Tamani to convince her that she is a faerie. She also learns it’s up to her to save her land from the evil influences that are trying to take it away from her and her family. This first novel is clearly designed to attract the Twilight set, though there’s significantly less edge (and blood). There is, however, a familiar triangle. Will Laurel choose solid, steady David, or will she be unable to resist Tamani’s lure? Stay tuned. Fine escapist fare, this neatly mixes the everyday with the otherworldly"-Amazon's description
Review: I love Tamani. David is a nice guy too, but there's just something about Tamani that draws me in. I really, really liked this one. It started kinda slow for me at first, but once Tamani came into the picture I just couldn't put it down. You got to check this one out.

Sucks To Be Me by Kimberly Pauley

Plot: "Mina Hamilton's parents want her dead. (Or undead to be precise.) They're vampires, and like it or not, Mina must decide whether to become a vampire herself. But Mina's more interested in hanging out with best friend Serena and trying to catch the eye of the too-hot-for-high-school Nathan Able than in the vampire training classes she's being forced to take. How's a girl supposed to find the perfect prom date and pass third-year French when her mom and dad are breathing down her neck--literally?"-Amazon description
Review: Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm a sucker for vamp books. This one is just about a girl who knows that vampires exist and has to decide whether or not to become one. It was really cute, and there was a couple little love interests in there. Read it if you like vamp books, or are below 15 :)

Going to Far by Jennifer Echols

Plot: "All Meg has ever wanted is to get away. Away from high school. Away from her backwater town. Away from her parents who seem determined to keep her imprisoned in their dead-end lives. But one crazy evening involving a dare and forbidden railroad tracks, she goes way too far...and almost doesn't make it back.

John made a choice to stay. To enforce the rules. To serve and protect. He has nothing but contempt for what he sees as childish rebellion, and he wants to teach Meg a lesson she won't soon forget. But Meg pushes him to the limit by questioning everything he learned at the police academy. And when he pushes back, demanding to know why she won't be tied down, they will drive each other to the edge -- and over...."-Amazon Description

Review: Okay, this book was awesome! You have to make time to read this one. Meg and John's relationship is ultra steamy. I could not put this one down! This one's a have to!

Cracked Up To Be by Courtney Summers

Plot:

"Perfect Parker Fadley isn’t so perfect anymore. She’s quit the cheerleading squad, she’s dumped her perfect boyfriend, and she’s failing school. Her parents are on a constant suicide watch and her counselors think she’s playing games…but what they don’t know, the real reason for this whole mess, isn’t something she can say out loud. It isn’t even something she can say to herself. A horrible thing has happened and it just might be her fault. If she can just remove herself from everybody--be totally alone--then everything will be okay...The problem is, nobody will let her." -Amazon's description

Review: This book moved pretty quickly, it had some great flashback scenes to help you understand Parker. There was a lot of mention of mental health issues in this book, and I found that interesting because as a nurse I know how very real those issues are. I enjoyed this book, it was kinda suspenseful. I just had to find out why a girl that had everything would just throw it away. Read it if your board :)

Dead Girl Walking / Dead Girl Dancing by Linda Joy Singleton

Saturday, June 6, 2009

Plot: BOOK ONE------Amber Borden has the worse since of direction ever! But that didn't stop her from trying to show the popular new girl the way to Jessica Bradley's in-crowd party. Things get totally screwed up when Amber gets them lost, and wind up in a graveyard instead. They eventually make it to the party and Amber over hears everyone call her a loser behind her back.

Upset, Amber goes home, and because she has the worst timing ever she gets hit by the mail-lady, which causes her to have an out-of-body experience. Amber finds that she has suddenly been body swapped with the most popular girl in school. Leah Montgomery. Can Amber survive as the most popular girl just being herself?

BOOK TWO---- Pretty much the same concept, just this time Amber's in a new body.

Review: I liked these little books. They were tiny, only like 250 pages each so I just read them back to back to make one big book. The end of the second one tells about Amber jumping into her next body...so there will be a third one. If you like sci-fi, good and bad angels kinda stuff you'll probably like these. For me, I dunno, I liked them...didn't love 'em.

To be Mona by Kelly Easton

Plot: I'm just going to copy and paste one from Amazon on this one.

'Sage Priestly is seventeen, and she longs to reinvent herself -- to strip away the fat, the past, the crazy mom, the unpaid bills. She longs to be her own version of the gorgeous and popular Mona Simms.
Sage starts dieting and exercising. She gets blond highlights and throws away all of her black clothes. Bit by bit she transforms herself. This is deeply troubling to her best friend, Vern, who is secretly in love with Sage just the way she is. But the boyfriend Sage wants -- the popular jock Roger -- suddenly notices her. And when they start dating, Sage thinks her life is turning around.
So why isn't Sage happier? Yes, Roger is a little too controlling and pushy, but isn't that what boys are like when you date them? What is it about the image Sage has created that just doesn't fit?
Smart, honest, and tough, Sage is a teen with more going for her than she thinks, but she still has a lot to learn.'

Review: Too many MC's in this one. I thought the concept of the story was great, but I thought this read was a little too confusing. I had to stop reading and look back a lot to find which characters head I was in since there were 4 different MC's (One girl: Sage, and Three Guys:Vern, Roger and Wal-Mart). I don't know...some people may like that, but I am a detail person, so this one wasn't one of my Fav's.

Perfect You By Elizabeth Scott

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Plot: Kate's life is completely ruined. Her Dad quits his job to open his own dumb perfect you vitamin store in the mall, and then her best friend suddenly becomes popular and dumps her for the in-crowd. Kate's life suddenly sucks and there is no-one to vent to. She has no friends and nothing interesting to do with her life. That is until she starts a secret affair with the school's most infamous heart breaker, Will. Kate shouldn't like Will, so she tries to stay away from him, but there's just something about him she can't get enough of.

Review: Another great novel by Elizabeth Scott. It has great teen voice, and I love any book that the MC says "craptastic". I devoured this book in one sitting. Too cute.

Bloom by Elizabeth Scott

Monday, June 1, 2009

Plot: Lauren is a teenage girl who seems to have everything...money, looks, and the guy every girl wants. Her relationship with Dave helps her feel apart of her high school's elite inner circle, and makes her question herself constantly...why me? Lauren is dumbfounded that someone as perfect as Dave would love her enough to be the only girl he's ever shared his secret with. Dave has made a promise of celibacy to himself because of his religious beliefs, and that is a major struggle for Lauren who constantly doubts the real reason he wants to be with her. Their relationship consists of limited touching and kissing and that does not help her to feel very wanted.

So after a year and a half of a no hanky-panky boring relationship with Dave things get shaken up a bit in Lauren's world when blast-from-the-past Evan returns into her life. Evan is unlike any boy she's ever known and now she realizes she's got a tough choice to make.

Review: For all you YA writers out there...pick this one up! It has great teen voice in 1st person present and makes you feel Lauren is really telling you the story. I loved this little YA contemporary novel...but I am a sucker for love triangles. So if ya got the time, get this one.
