Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire Review

Friday, November 11, 2011

Title: Beautiful Disaster
Author: Jamie McGuire
Source: Amazon (self published)

Two Different Covers Available:

Plot:

The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend America, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the charming college co-ed. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his charms, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’ apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

My Thoughts:

This is one of those books, either you love it or you hate it. I've seen this novel referred to as literary crack before, and I have to say I agree. This novel grabbed me from the moment the bad boy love interest stepped on the scene. He was amazing. He did things that I didn't expect and I was shocked. SHOCKED and appalled by some of the things he did in this book, which in large part hooked me even more. So many times I find myself predicting what's going to happen in a novel. Most of the time I'm spot on. I've read a ton of books and just about all YA books follow a certain formula ,so to speak, that make them predictable.I couldn't do that with this book.

The one thing about this novel is it's self published, so sure it had some things that maybe needed tweaked, but the main plot is about the relationship between the main character and the love interest and it's strong. It was hard to tell at times that this was self published! Not since Twilight have I read a novel formulated around the connection of two people that hooked me completely. I mean, I read this book twice in about a week because I missed the characters after the first go around.

I recommended this novel to my fellow reviewers here at READING, WRITING AND WAITING and there are a couple that are Team Travis right along with me and one other I know for sure didn't really like it. So, I recommend this book to be read with an open mind. Sure the love interest is a little heinous at times, and sure there are some parts that are unbelievable and could've been tweaked. But read it if you adore romances that are a little reminiscent of Harlequins with smokin' hot love interests.

Bad Boys Make Me Melt: 10 of the Hottest of the Bad!

Monday, March 14, 2011

There's just something about a bad boy isn't there? I mean, come on, tell me you didn't have a little soft spot for that rebel guy in your high school. The one who wasn't afraid to flip off a teacher, pull a prank or ride a motorcycle. Is it because they are rebels living without a cause. Out to raise hell and say a big F.U. to all authority?

Who knows really why we love them. I just know when a book throws in the residential bad boy, who is well written, that book quickly jumps to my OMGILOVETHISBOOKSOMUCHYOUSHOULDALLREADITRIGHTNOW stack. *sigh* I love them. Let's face it, sex sells, and these boys are the epitome of hotness. Here's my list in no particular order of hotness and a few videos to go with it. ENJOY, and feel free to shout out who is your favorite literary/televison/movie/rocker bad boy.

1.) Damon Salvatore from Vampire Diaries
(TV) Damon Quotes:
Stefan: Are you actually gonna be careful for once?

Damon: Yes, I've become you. How tragic for both of us. Gotta run. Have a murder to plan. Busy day.

2.) Eric Northman from the Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood Series
"I don't like having feelings," _Eric Northman"

3.) Patch from Hush, Hush Series

"Do you want to possess my body?"

"I want to do a lot of things to you body, but that's not one of them."

- Patch And Nora (Hush Hush)

 4.) Luc from Personal Demons
"Gabriel.

This has to be his fault, somehow. I'm going to track him down, pluck out his angel feathers, and stuff a pillow with them." --Luc, Personal Demons

5.) Ren from Nightshade
"What are you doing?” I tried to pull away, but his hand slipped from my hair to cup the nape of my neck.

When he whispered, his warm breath brushed over my lips. “Just let me kiss you, Calla. You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to. No one has to know.”

My lips parted as I drew a sudden, startled breath and in that instant his mouth was on mine, soft as velvet. I closed my eyes against the rush of a hundred wings that suddenly beat in my chest and soared through my body.

His scent was all around me. Leather, sandalwood, bonfires in autumn. He pulled back, but only for the sake of moving his lips to trail over my neck.

My blood was on fire and I was shaking. Is this really happening?

I couldn’t stop thinking about Shay in the clearing. About asking him to kiss me. The electric touch of his lips on mine.

But this is where I belong. I tried to push the memories back.

Ren stroked my knee, his fingers wandering up my thigh, sliding beneath the hem of my dress.

I grabbed his wrist. “Wait.”

He didn’t free his arm from my grasp but continued kissing my collar bone.

“Let’s skip the waiting part,” he murmured into my skin." --Ren and Calla

6.) Adrian from Vampire Diaries

"You've asked me out tons of times."

"Not really. I've made inappropriate suggestions and frequently pushed for nudity. But I've never asked you out on a real date." --Adrian and Rose

7.) Seth from the Wicked Lovely Series

"She stood in his kitchen, watching him toy with the ring in his lip. It wasn't quite that he was biting it, but sucking it into his mouth. He did that when he was concentrating. It isn't sexy. He's not sexy. But he was, and she was staring at him like a fool. "wow" she whispered (.....)"Wow, huh?" His voice was low, husky. His chair creaked as he stood. His footsteps seemed strangely loud as he closed the couple yards between them. Then he was beside her. "I can work with wow" --Seth and Aislinn

8.) Dean Winchester from TV's Supernatural

Sam Winchester: Hey Dean... what I said earlier, about mom and dad, I'm sorry...

Dean Winchester: [raises hand to stop Sam] No chick flick moments.

Sam Winchester: Alright... jerk.

Dean Winchester: Bitch.

9.) Lucas Ross from The Evernight Series

"You're impossible," he murmured. "But you're worth it."--Lucus tp Biannica

10.) Dante from The Hourglass Door Series

"I'm not who you think I am, Abby," he said in English.

I almost smiled. It was the kind of melodramatic line people said in bad made-for-TV movies, but then I saw his eyes, bleak and distant, and I knew he was telling the truth.

"I thought you were Dante Alexander, foreign-exchange student visiting from Italy."

He shook his head slowly, sadly. "Not exactly." --Dante and Addby
