My Ereader Won't Let Me Cheat

Sunday, December 19, 2010

About a month and a half ago I bought myself an early Christmas present. Yep, that's right I bought an ereader. To be honest, when I bought it I wasn't sure how much I'd actually use it. I figured I'd miss the physical book in my hand and didn't know if I was ready to jump on the whole ereader train. But, I was getting so many invitations to some big publishing companies to read digital ARCs I had to find a way to carry those digital books around with me.

The first book was a little rough getting through because I'm a book cheater. I had to learn to adjust. I know I'm not the only person in the world who flips through the book to know what I'm getting into. I like to know who the LI is, or if the book is dragging to see if it changes pace somewhere along the line. The ereader, however makes that kind of difficult. It forces me to read the entire novel without being able to flip through the remaining pages. Therefore, I can't cheat. I have to read the book page by page to discover all the answers, which also makes it hard for me to flip back and reread sections if I overlooked something.

So, I guess my point is, I love the convenience of being able to carry my digital downloads around with me, but I still miss the physical book. I'm interested to hear your guys thoughts on ereaders. Do you have one? Are you going to get one? What impact do you think these little gadgets will have on the publishing industry?

Shout out and share your opinions.

I plan on getting a Kindle after Christmas (it's going to be a Christmas gift from the BF). I want it so I can read the ebook ARCs I get and also I can borrow ebooks from the public library here which makes it that much easier because I don't have to drive back and forth and remember to bring them back on time. LOL

I think I will still always love to read an actual book because I love the feel of the pages and the ability to flip back to reread sections like you stated. But also I mark pages with sticky notes sometimes (I hear the Kindle allows you to highlight sections etc - so I might like it better then some of the other ereaders that are out there).

I'll be checking back to see what others say about this topic. :)

I flipped through on my friends ereader (well she has an ipad - I know that is so not the same comparison) but I would imagine you can put in a page number. I download tons of ebooks in .pdf formats for my laptop or cellphone to read and I'm able to skip through when I read them that way. I'm still trying to decide if I'm ready to treat myself to the ereader and which one I want. I'm looking at the nook.

We had our Christmas yesterday - step kids. And I got a Kobo reader. I've already purchased 6 new books and read one and half. I LOVE it already. Can't imagine life without it. Love the convenience of buying a book right away that I've heard about. Also takes up much less room than all those hard covers on the shelf! And it's so easy to hold and read with one hand, or just leave on the table while you eat lunch.
But, I'm weird in that I read books one page at a time. I do NOT skip to the end! (my step daughter does this and I was horrified)

HAHAHAHAHA Best Example of book skipping. When I read New Moon back in '06 or whenever it came out and I was like OMG Edward left?!?! I'm done with this series if he did...And Yes I frantically skipped to the back to hunt for Edward dialog and everything was once again right with the world. LOL

You wouldn't believe how many people I've talked to about that book did the same thing!! LOL

NOOOOOO. I didn't know that. I totally look forward too and I was going to get a ereader for myself as well. That's a bummer.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my nook. It's one of my favorite things and I never regretted my decision to purchase it. I do like to switch back and forth between real books and ereaders though just to have some variety.
LOL cheating is bad. :P I have to say that I do have a bad habit of flipping to the last page just to see how long a book is and at the same time my eye just happens to catch the last line of the book. Bad habit. :P I like how I know how much more I have to read with my ereader without having to spoil anything.
