Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers--Review

Sunday, August 29, 2010

Title: Personal Demons
Author: Lisa Desrochers
Published: September 14th 2010 by Tor Teen
Genre: Young Adult
Special Note: ARC review
Paperback, 364 pages

Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She's spent years keeping everyone at a distance—even her closest friends—and it seems her senior year will be more of the same...until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him. What she doesn't know is that Luc works in Acquisitions—for Hell—and she possesses a unique skill set that has the King of Hell tingling with anticipation. All Luc has to do is get her to sin, and he’s as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn’t stand a chance.

Unfortunately for Luc, Heaven has other plans, and the angel, Gabe, is going to do whatever it takes to make sure that Luc doesn’t get what he came for. And it isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just her soul.

But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay…for all of them.
My Thoughts:

Not since the infamous love triangle of the Twilight Saga have I been so wrapped up in a story involving two immortals fighting over the outcome of a high school girl's soul. This story hooked me from page one, because you know automatically that Luc is a demon. He tells you in his first person prospective, and even gives you a mini run-down of how he can read emotions and what his job in Hell is. He's one of Hell's best demons in Acquisitions, and he's there to tag Frannie's soul for Hell because she is really wanted by the big boss down there. Luc is the ultimate bad boy, and if I were Frannie, I wouldn't have a chance to say no to him either.

The chemistry between Luc, aka Lucifer, and Frannie is undeniable, but Frannie is used to keeping people at a distance, so she does her best to avoid his (and every other guy who seems to like her) advances. It's great that this novel has alternating points of view because I loved getting into her head. Frannie has so much bottled up guilt over her little brother and few other 'incidents' she couldn't stop, it makes her question her traditional Catholic upbringing and if there really is even a God.
Don't think Luc is the only one out to collect Frannie. Oh no, she's special, and Heaven has sent it's own eye-candy, Gabe, aka Gabriel, down to make sure Luc doesn't succeed in his mission. Is it wrong to lust after angels, because this one is totally swoon worthy?? LOL I love it when Gabe and Luc get into battle of wits and words. Luc has feelings for Frannie and doesn't even know how to recognize jealousy. It's great to see his feelings develop for her and the struggle he goes through with that.

It's been a long time since I've liked two love interests in a book like these two. Ms. Desrochers did a fantastic job of making all the characters feel real and giving them each a very distinct personality. This is a must read for fans of the Paranormal Romance Young Adult Genre!

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa--REVIEW

Friday, August 27, 2010

Title: The Iron King
By: Julie Kagawa
Published: Feb 1, 2010 (Harlequin Teen)
Rating: 4 out of 5

Meghan Chase has never fit in at her small-town high school, and now, on the eve of her 16th birthday, she discovers why. When her half brother is kidnapped, Meghan is drawn into a fantastical world she never imagined--the world of Faery, where anything you see may try to eat you, and Meghan is the daughter of the summer faery king. Now she will journey into the depths of Faery to face an unknown enemy . . . and beg the help of a winter prince who might as soon kill her as let her touch his icy heart. The Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series.
My Thoughts:

I wasn't sure what to expect when I opened this novel, but I was pleasantly surprised. Meghan reeled me in immediately with her vulnerability and I rooted for her to succeed from the moment the jerky jock kid sent the dirty text in the intro. Ms. Kagawa has done a wonderful job weaving in a commonly known faerie story and twisting it to work with her story.

Now, on to the boys. I'm thinking her BFF likes her, even though he's her sworn protector, but I'm not sure...Guess I'll have to wait and see how that works out in the next installment in this series. Ash, on the other hand, there is definite sexual tension there, and I love it. Even though Ash wants to kill her, I still find him hot. Maybe, it's because of that whole bad-boy vibe he emits? :) All I can say is I'm team Ash!

This YA novel is thick with romance, but I expected that since it was published by Harlequin Teen. So, if you are into faeries, bad boys who want to kill but still make you swoon, and old-time rivalries, this one's for you.

The Death (and Further Adventures) of Silas Winterbottom: The Body Theif by Stephen M. Giles--Review

Monday, August 23, 2010

Title: The Death (and Further Adventures) of Silas Winterbottom: The Body Theif
By: Stephen M. Giles
Genre: Middle Grade
Published: August 10th, 2010 Sourcebooks Jabberwockey
Special Note: ARC review

And you thought your family was strange.

I am dying. . . I might get the chance to know you before death takes me...I would like you to be my guest at Sommerset. . .I have enclosed a check for $ 10,000. . . Should you accept my offer...

Uncle Silas has always been greedy, evil, insulting, and extremely rich! But a dying uncle with a vast fortune is definitely one worth getting to know. Even if it means spending 2 months on his secluded island home with a houseful of suspicious servants and a hungry pet crocodile.

But what is Uncle Silas really up to? Will Adele, Milo, and Isabella outlive Uncle Silas to inherit his money? And just who is that mysterious "guest" in his basement? Is it worth the money (or their lives) to stick around and find out?
My Thoughts:

This story had an awesome plot. I loved how the kids where sent to their crotchety uncle Silas's under false pretenses. The author did a great job allowing us to get to know the characters in this novel and the motives behind each one of them to get Silas's money.

I was not expecting the twist on why the kids where there, but it was great and added just the right amount of darkness to this middle-grade story.

If you like mystery with a little sci-fi magic mixed in. This one's for you.

Rules of Attraction (Perfect Chemistry, #2)Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles

(Second Book in the Perfect Chemistry Series)
Published:  April 13, 2010
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Carlos Fuentes returns to America after living in Mexico for a year, he doesn’t want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him at a high school in Colorado . Carlos likes living his life on the edge and wants to carve his own path—just like Alex did. Then he meets Kiara Westford. She doesn’t talk much and is completely intimidated by Carlos’ wild ways. As they get to know one another, Carlos assumes Kiara thinks she’s too good for him, and refuses to admit that she might be getting to him. But he soon realizes that being himself is exactly what Kiara needs right now.
This book was sooooo freaking great! Can't express how much I enjoyed this one. I loved Perfect Chemistry and this one was even better. Carlos is the ultimate rebel and it's exciting to see him fall in love with Britney.
My Thoughts:

This book was sooooo freaking great! Can't express how much I enjoyed this one. I loved Perfect Chemistry and this one was even better. Carlos is the ultimate rebel and it's exciting to see him fall in love with Kiara.

The dialog was gritty and real, totally sounded like a tough kid from the streets and the duel points of view was just the icing on the cake. There were also some very Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rawr moments in this book. Loved it!

The Ghost and the Goth By Stacey Kade

Title: The Ghost and the Goth
By: Stacey Kade
Published: June 29, 2010

After a close encounter with the front end of a school bus, Alona Dare goes from Homecoming Queen to Queen of the Dead. Now she’s stuck here in spirit form with no sign of the big, bright light coming to take her away. To make matters worse, the only person who might be able to help her is Will Killian, a total loser/outcast type who hates the social elite. He alone can see and hear her, but he wants nothing to do with the former mean girl of Groundsboro High.

Can they get over their mutual distrust—and this weird attraction between them—to work together before Alona vanishes for good and Will is locked up for seeing things that don’t exist?

My Thoughts:

I finished this novel in about two days. I literally got sucked in and had to find out what the connection was between Alona and Will. I like the fact that Will isn't a true Goth, just different, and Alona started noticing little things about him that made him cute. Things, she would've overlooked when she was her alive "bitchy" self, like his perfect smile.

This book has duel points of view in first person. Alona feels a little abrasive and shallow in the beginning, but as time goes on she stops hiding behind her stuck up mask and lets Will know her true self. Also, I thought it was so cute that Alona was, like, Will's dream girl and he finally gets some one on one time with her.

This was a really cute book. So, if you like ghosts, and snarky characters that redeem themselves, this ones for you.

It's Not Summer Without You by Jenny Han--Review

It's Not Summer Without You (Summer, #2)It's Not Summer Without You by Jenny Han

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Belly. She had me hooked when I first met her in THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY. There is a great love triangle in this book, and that dang Conrad continued to stomp on my heart just like he did Belly's. BUT I think that's what made this book so great, it broke my heart. The ending is bitter sweat, because this love triangle invovles two brothers, so it's not like they can avoid each other because they both want the same girl.

Loved it! Wish there was another installment.

Jekel Love Hyde by Beth Fantaskey--Review

Title: Jekel Loves Hyde
By: Beth Fantaskey
Published: May 3, 2010

Jill Jekel has always obeyed her parents’ rules – especially the one about never opening the mysterious, old box in her father’s office. But when her dad is murdered, and her college savings disappear, she's tempted to peek inside, as the contents might be key to a lucrative chemistry scholarship.

To better her odds, Jill enlists the help of gorgeous, brooding Tristen Hyde, who has his own dark secrets locked away. As the team of Jekel and Hyde, they recreate experiments based on the classic novel, hoping not only to win a prize, but to save Tristen’s sanity. Maybe his life. But Jill’s accidental taste of a formula unleashes her darkest nature and compels her to risk everything – even Tristen’s love – just for the thrill of being… bad.

My Thoughts:

This novel I picked up to read because I fell in love with Beth Fantaskey's last novel JESSICA'S GUIDE TO DATING ON THE DARK SIDE and the cover of JEKEL LOVES HYDE is awesome. This book has alternating points of view between Jill and Tristen, and chapters in italics when their evil persona's take over. Loved getting inside all their heads!

Jill Jekel is a shy, glasses wearing (I only mention this because you hardly ever hear of an MC who wears glasses), smart girl who seems invisible to the rest of her classmates. It seems like the only time they speak to her is when they want her help in chemistry, where she excels. I liked Jill at the beginning, but she definitely needed some back bone, which is why I found myself liking her more when she drank the formula and unleashed her inner bad girl. I especially liked when she told off a jerky football player type who had always given her a hard time, referring to his *clears throat* "private manly parts" as being too small. It was hilarious. Funny enough, even, for me to read it out loud to my hubster. Of course throughout the book this is mentioned a couple more times through the dialog between her and the football player who seems bent on proving her wrong about his size. LOL

Now lets move on to Tristen. Ahhhhh Tristen, the tormented boy who believes he's a killer, and is oh-so-smexy, who wouldn't be attracted to that? ;) I enjoyed the chapters through his points of view, because he's confident and has a darker side than Jill. He really pulled me in and had me flipping through this book like mad.

This was a good one for me, it had it's slow moments but the alternating egos made up for those scenes. Read this one if you are into urban fantasy with heavy romance and a little chemistry lesson sprinkled in.

Crossed Out by Kim Baccellia--Review

Title: Crossed Out
By: Kim Baccellia
Published: May 17th 2010

Stephanie Stewart didn't ask for her gift of guiding the deceased to the other side but she's stuck with it. Why can't dead people just follow that bright light and leave her alone? When Mr. Undead wants to use her special talent for his own evil purposes, her little gift becomes a major liability.
My Thoughts:

In the past couple years I've read a ton of Urban Fantasy novels and I can't stress how important "voice" is in these novels. You have to feel like the main character is your best friend and you want her to overcome all of problems that arise. Ms. Baccellia has done a wonderful job of making Stephanie jump off the pages and gave her a quirky flaw. Eczema. Ha Ha. I know, right. It kind of reminded me of "Buffy" the movie, remember how she got cramps when a vampire was near...LOL. But it was great! When Stephanie's leg starts to itch, watch out!Oh, yeah, Stephanie also paints crosses to help with her ghost problems.

They kind of made me think of this:

Now, on to the boys. There are two boys in this book. One is the mysterious new guy that is unbelievably hot, and the other is the best friend. Both are great, and totally pull you into the story. There is also a creepy shrink that has the same creepy cross painting obsession as Stephanie, which adds to the tensions and mystery.

I enjoyed this book. It had all the things I like: Boys, Mystery, Creepiness and Supernatural Ability!

The Summer of Skinny Dipping by Amanda Howells--REVIEW

TITLE: The Summer of Skinny Dipping
Author: Amanda Howells
Published:  June 1, 2010 Source Books Fire
Genre: Young Adult--Contemporary
Special Note: Review Copy From Sourcefire Books

"Sometimes I still wake up shivering in the early hours of the morning, drowning in dreams of being out there in the ocean that summer, of looking up at the moon and feeling as invisible and free as a fish. But I'm jumping ahead, and to tell the story right I have to go back to the very beginning. To a place called Indigo Beach. To a boy with pale skin that glowed against the dark waves. To the start of something neither of us could have predicted, and which would mark us forever, making everything that came after and before seem like it belonged to another life.

My name is Mia Gordon: I was sixteen years old, and I remember everything...."

After getting dumped by her boyfriend, Mia is looking forward to spending a relaxing summer in the Hamptons with her glamorous cousins. But when she arrives she find her cousins distant, moody, and caught up with a fast crowd. Mia finds herself lonelier than ever, until she meets her next-door-neighbor, Simon Ross. And from the very first time he encourages her to go skinny dipping, she's caught in a current impossible to resist.

Timeless in feel, The Summer of Skinny-Dipping is a poignant, literary coming-of-age romance that will live on long after summer has ended.
My Thoughts:

I've read a TON of fluffy contemporary YA beach novels and they usually all have the same plot: Vacation, girl meets boy, they have a fight, and now they are back together, but The Summer of Skinny Dipping doesn't really fall into that mold. I found myself drawn into the main character's, Mia, world, totally absorbed with the family drama with her hoity-toity cousins. Their problems felt very real to me and kept me engaged the entire time and Mia's like the nice girl that's caught up in the drama.

The love interest, Simon, is unlike most YA hotties. While he's flawed and seems to have a mysterious, outcasted past, there's definitely a sweetness about him and I can see why Mia is drawn to him. Simon pushes Mia to open up and take risks, like skinny dipping at 2am, and he seems to say just the right things. *SIGH* Where can I get a guy like Simon???

Now, I won't spoil the ending for you, but I will tell you it will shock you. It's one ending I didn't see coming, that's for sure, but it was realistic. Ms. Howells has written a beautiful novel and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

(PS: GOT YA (linky on my sidebar) is going to post a 5 minute book club on this novel soon, so be sure to check it out!)

First Person Present the New HOT thing in YA??

Sunday, August 8, 2010

A lot of people HATE first person point of view for what ever reason and dislike present tense even more. I myself, LOVE IT! I've been writing in first present for a couple years, and I got to tell ya, it just feels natural to me--kind of like my best friend is telling me the story. It brings me closer to the main character and makes me care for them like they are my BFF and am apart of something happening right now.

In the last few weeks I've gotten my hands on some pretty buzz-worthy ARCs and I've noticed a few of them were written in 1st person POV, which made me quite happy! But now I'm left wondering...IS present tense now the HOT trendy way to write YA?

What do you guys think??? Have you heard any agent/editor buzz on it?

Cassia has always trusted their choices. It’s barely any price to pay for a long life, the perfect job, the ideal mate. So when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is the one . . . until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now Cassia is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path no one else has ever dared follow—between perfection and passion.

Matched is a story for right now and storytelling with the resonance of a classic.
My Thoughts:

The world building in this novel is fabulous! Ms. Condie does an awesome job setting up the rules our main character, Cassia, and the rest of the society have to live by. This novel puts a unique spin on the old school arranged marriage story even though our lovable MC gets matched with her male BFF, Xander. Being matched basically means you know who you are going to marry and have babies with by the time you are seventeen-years-old. No guessing. The decision has been made by 'The Society'.

Ky, the rebel and outcast of the story, has been around Cassia since they were kids, but Ky comes from the Outter Providence which basically means he's a savage in the world of our story. Someone not able to be thrown into the match pool to have a family someday because he comes from a place where people don't follow The Society's rules. Cassia has always been aware of Ky, but finds herself strangely drawn to him after an error that reveals Ky may be her 'match' instead of Xander.

I was pretty torn on who Cassia should choose. One one hand you have her best friend, Xander, who is awesome and loves her and you think how awesome to get matched with someone you know. Plus, Xander would do anything for her. Then, on the other hand, you have Ky, who is mysterious and seems to say the right things at the right times. Gah!!! I'm still torn! I will let you in on a little secret, though. There will be a sequel to this novel! At the end you find out which boy Cassia decides to be with and she is just about to start the true quest to make that happen in the last few pages. So this one leaves you hanging at the end.

The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting Review

The Body Finder (Body Finder, #1)The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her “power” to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he’s claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay’s intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she’s falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.(less)

My Thoughts:

Could not put this one down! The main character, Violet, hooked me right away with her special body-finding gift and her secret pining over her BFF since diapers, Jay. By page 80 I was like, come on girl can't you see the signs that this boy digs you too?!?!? But don't worry, I only say that because I wanted them to get together and be happy. Couldn't help it. I cared about them.

The plot behind the serial killer was awesome and I really enjoyed the little chapters through the killer's eyes. It had me searching for clues throughout the book that Violet may have missed.

Any body who knows me, knows I'm a first person point of view snob. It's just really had for me to care about characters in 3rd person most of the time, but I didn't have that issue with this novel. Kudos Ms. Derting for writing one of the most riveting books I've read this year.
